EXALT, a rival human faction, fields agents in red gear, armed like ordinary soldiers, indistinguishable at first glance from the recruits you command. The battlefield fills with foes of human face, and paranoia is born of this resemblance. The art direction shifts the threat from the grotesque alien to the man in uniform, more disturbing because familiar.
The audio dressing turns around a resource under a timer. MELD, a precious matter locked in self-destructing containers, imposes a race: a pressing countdown starts to beat the moment you spot a canister, and the tension of a tactical mission is doubled by that of a clock. The soundtrack makes the reflective slowness of turn-based play coexist with the sonic urgency of loot about to vanish, two rhythms at odds.
The story adds the hunt for a traitor within. Behind the invasion hides a human conspiracy, EXALT, which manipulates fear for its own ends, and you must unmask the mole infiltrated into your own organization. To the threat from the sky is added a more intimate one, an enemy who shares your ranks. Betrayal becomes a second front, waged no longer outside but within.
