Story
"Solid"
Within turns the soldier's body into a construction site: on one side the MEC chassis, massive prosthetics too wide for the lab doors, on the other the gene mods, discreet to the point of unease, eyes and skin subtly altered. Between the steel giant and the retouched human, the expansion moves the visual question from the enemy's camp to yours: what your own squad looks like after six months of war.
Gameplay

"Pleasant"
Addictiveness
"Obsessive"
Positioning your squad tile after tile, knowing one mistake can cost a cherished soldier, sets up a tactical tension where each successful mission calls for the next. Developing your base and improving your troops reward the strategy. Its randomness and its difficulty sometimes frustrate, but the attachment to your recruits and the "just one more mission" make every game hard to wrap up.
Difficulty
"Balanced"
Lifespan
"Massive"
By absorbing everything in Enemy Unknown and then building on it, this stand-alone version swells an already dense campaign. Mec troopers, gene mods and the EXALT threat add maps, missions and research branches that lengthen every run. Paired with permadeath and Ironman mode, that generosity makes Enemy Within the edition players still restart to unlock it all.

Collector interest

North American (NTSC-U) edition of XCOM Enemy Within, a standalone expansion that enriches Firaxis's strategy with new units, technologies and threats, becoming the fullest and most recommended form of this genre resurrection. Still accessible on the US market, its desirability rests on this status as the edition to favor for its richness rather than scarcity. The savvy pick for the best XCOM of this generation on the console.

Better with friends

Turn-based strategy of exemplary tension, whose multiplayer mode pits two commanders building their squad before clashing tile by tile. The competition is cerebral and merciless: anticipating, managing cover and striking at the right moment decides everything, the slightest error paid in full. Niche but deep, and reliant on uncertain servers, it offers strategists duels of rare intensity.

Is XCOM - Enemy Within still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2013 on Xbox 360, Firaxis' XCOM Enemy Within is the major expansion to Enemy Unknown, considerably enriching the excellent turn based strategy with new resources, genetic and mechanical soldier upgrades, and a human threat added to the invasion. These additions deepen management and customisation without distorting the tactical tension where every soldier can die permanently. The cover system and the constant risk stay at their peak. The difficulty stays demanding. But the whole is richer than ever. For fans of turn based strategy, this expanded version is the best way to discover XCOM today.
