The ninja squirrel is animated with a generous frame count, notably during slides and shuriken throws. The scenery, a sawmill, waterfalls, a lumber camp, a canyon, plays on strong greens and ochres, and the enemies borrow from the cartoon register without ever breaking the readability of the action.
Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel, a Sunsoft platformer spun off from the Aero the Acro-Bat universe, released late on the Mega Drive. Its collector interest lies in that late-life status, made in a limited print as the machine declined, and in its membership of a small Sunsoft line followed by fans. The European edition, with a narrower PAL pressing, is markedly harder to gather complete and the most prized in the region. Desirability rests on the relative rarity of the console's last games and on the rising value of late platformers in good shape.
Is Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel still worth playing in 2026?
A Sunsoft platformer, Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel has a ninja squirrel run through colorful, snappy levels with blades and acrobatics, in a spin-off of the Aero the Acro-Bat world. The lively handling, the careful art direction and the brisk pace make it a pleasant, demanding mascot platformer, in the vein of the era's Sunsoft productions. The difficulty stays steep. A nice pick for fans of polished retro 2D platforming and nostalgics of 1990s mascots.
