Capcom's vertical shooter ported to NES with care. The plane can barrel-roll to dodge, enemy formations are well designed. Not revolutionary but solid, snappy, and well paced for short sessions.

Capcom's first vertical shooter, '1942' carries pioneer status in the lineage that led to '1943' and then 'Strikers 1945'. The blue Famicom cartridge remains common in Japan, but the early NES US production and Pin Test pressings are noticeably more sought after. The cote rests on its place in arcade shmup history rather than scarcity.

Is 1942 still worth playing in 2026?

A careful NES port of Capcom's vertical shooter, 1942 remains a surprisingly effective classic. The spiralling dodge roll, well-thought enemy formations and brisk pacing build a readable retro shoot perfectly sized for short sessions. The visuals stay modest, the difficulty fair and the arcade echo carries cleanly to the console. Not a genre peak, but a solid base for what Capcom would later refine. For 8-bit shooter fans and arcade heritage hunters, a pleasant detour today and a fine cart for a few warm-up runs.
