Axiom Verge, a one-author metroidvania by Thomas Happ, praised for its eerie retro atmosphere and inventive weapons, whose physical release was handled in a limited run by a specialist publisher. On a console with an already sought library, its desirability rests on this status as a physical copy of a first-digital game and the prestige of a solo work rather than wide distribution.

Is Axiom Verge still worth playing in 2026?

An indie metroidvania by Tom Happ, Axiom Verge offers a 2D adventure where hero Trace explores an alien world with varied arsenal and original glitch system. The sublime retro pixel art direction, precise handling and mysterious sci-fi scenario make it an absolute modern metroidvania reference on Wii U. For anyone fond of Metroid or seeking an absolutely essential indie metroidvania, an absolutely essential recommendation today still without any hesitation on the Nintendo machine for fans truly here indeed.
