Toaplan shmup transitioning toward the bullet-hell era. Accessible compared to competition, visually clean. Enemy patterns remain readable despite density. Less demanding than DoDonPachi, ideal for genre newcomers.

Japan exclusive Saturn edition of Toaplan's Batsugun, distributed by Banpresto in February 1996, the last Toaplan shoot ported to the platform before the studio dissolved and its teams moved on to Cave. That historical position makes it a central heritage object for Toaplan enthusiasts, and the Saturn port is generally recognised as one of the most faithful arcade conversions of the era. Banpresto Japan run was short, jewel case with intact obi, complete with obi has become a reference piece of the Toaplan market.

An underrated gem

The missing link between the classic shooter and the modern manic shooter, this Toaplan title already laid the groundwork for the bullet hell genre with its sprays of fire and its level system. Stuck in Japan and overshadowed by its descendants, it remains overlooked outside expert circles. A historic must-play for anyone curious about the DNA of the shoot'em up.

Is Batsugun still worth playing in 2026?

A vertical shoot by Toaplan adapted from arcade, Batsugun offers a demanding shoot with a ship progression system by level gained mid game, ancestor of modern shoot systems. The polished futuristic military art direction, dense patterns and energetic soundtrack make it an absolute vertical shoot reference on Saturn. For anyone fond of demanding Toaplan vertical shoots or seeking a modern shoot precursor, a warm recommendation still valid today without any hesitation truly here indeed for any genre fan now.
