Mistwalker and Sakaguchi craft a classic 360-flavoured JRPG with Toriyama designs and Uematsu in top form. The story plays it safe, but the adventure breathes and each chapter carries the spirit of old-school Final Fantasy.

The visual idea fits in one image: each character casts a gigantic shadow that peels off the ground and fights in their place, an outsized blue dragon, phoenix or minotaur towering over children with rounded proportions. That constant scale relationship, a small silhouette and a colossal creature joined at the feet, organizes every battle scene in the game.

Carried by Hironobu Sakaguchi's signature touch, this JRPG unfolds a turn-based adventure where powering up the shadows, building parties and an emotional narrative steer a patient yet rewarding progression. Roaming its lands, taking on fearsome wildlife and optimizing every class takes time, and it's precisely that old-school generosity, exclusive to the console, that earns it a reputation as a grand epic among genre fans.

The Japanese and Asian version of Blue Dragon, the first release of this RPG conceived as a Microsoft flagship on the Japanese market, gathered around a trio of legendary creators. On a region-locked console, this original three-disc edition is sought by anyone wanting the title in its native form. Its interest lies in this status as the initial release of an emblematic project and in its multi-disc structure.

Is Blue Dragon still worth playing in 2026?

An RPG from Mistwalker under Hironobu Sakaguchi, Blue Dragon revives the classic turn based JRPG, carried by Akira Toriyama's character design and Nobuo Uematsu's music. The shadow system granting evolving classes, the warm aesthetic and the good natured tone make it a generous, accessible adventure. The sometimes slow pace and an embraced classicism weigh. An endearing JRPG for fans of traditional turn based combat and nostalgics of the genre's golden age.
