Bomberman pivots into a 3D platformer to rescue Princess Millian. The five more linear worlds work beautifully, throwing bombs on the run gives the action welcome bite, and the electronic soundtrack is a real triumph. A bold pivot that pays off handsomely.

Original Japanese version from April 1998, whose Mirian Oujo o Sukue subtitle instantly identifies the NTSC-J run. Predating the Western editions by several months, it keeps the original balancing and presentation before the difficulty tweaks made for export. Desirability rests on this status as the first strike of an atypical Bomberman and on a Japanese box illustrating Princess Millian that the PAL and NTSC-U versions set aside.

Is Bomberman Hero - Mirian Oujo o Sukue! still worth playing in 2026?

Bomberman Hero breaks with the series' usual formula by adopting a linear 3D platforming format, in which Bomberman crosses varied worlds to save Princess Millian. The new solo approach, the diversity of levels and a memorable electronic soundtrack bring real identity. The absence of the series' emblematic multiplayer may disorient regulars. For fans of retro 3D platformers and those curious about an atypical Bomberman, it is an original and pleasant experience, to approach for what it is.
