Port of Tecmo's 3D arcade fighter on Saturn, technically impressive for the console. Instant counter-attack system is fun and accessible. Technically less impressive than PS1 version, but game dynamics remain intact.

Original Japanese Saturn edition of Dead or Alive, distributed by Tecmo in October 1997, a port of the Model 2 arcade by Tomonobu Itagaki's team in the most faithful version achievable on the machine. The port stayed Japan only on Saturn while the PlayStation got a Western localization, which makes it for Itagaki enthusiasts the only physical Saturn access to the first DoA. Tecmo Japan run was short, jewel case with intact obi, complete with obi clearly sought after.

Better with friends

Supple, accessible 3D fighting where the counter system rewards reading your opponent as much as raw reflexes. In a duel, beginners quickly find their footing while regulars refine their throws, which keeps evenings nicely balanced. The trap-laden arenas trigger falls and hilarious reversals that instantly rekindle the urge to clash face to face.

Is Dead or Alive still worth playing in 2026?

A 3D versus by Tecmo adapted from arcade, Dead or Alive offers acrobatic combats with multi level interactive arena system and fighters of distinct styles. The polished art direction, animation fluidity and tactical counter system make it a good arcade adaptation on Saturn. For anyone fond of 3D versus games or wishing to discover the roots of the Dead or Alive saga, a warm recommendation still valid today without any hesitation on the Sega machine for fans truly indeed here for any newcomer.
