Sega's underwater survival-horror, clearly inspired by Resident Evil. Successfully oppressive atmosphere, original underwater settings. Mechanics lack variety but atmosphere compensates. An underrated Saturn exclusive that deserves better.

Underwater survival horror developed in-house by Sega, released late in 1998 as one of the last major Saturn titles. Often framed as Sega's answer to Resident Evil, it blends an oppressive mood with oxygen management. The US version had a tiny print run amid the console's commercial collapse, making it one of the most expensive and chased Western Saturn games, with lasting demand and almost no supply.

Is Deep Fear still worth playing in 2026?

A survival horror from Sega, Deep Fear transposes the genre's codes to an underwater base overrun by parasite creatures, where the hero must manage not only ammo but also oxygen, which constantly drains. This air management mechanic adds a constant tension to a horror adventure in the Resident Evil lineage, carried by a successful claustrophobic mood. The title is one of the Saturn's last great games. For a retro survival horror fan, someone curious about a Saturn exclusive or a collector, the title keeps an oppressive atmosphere and a definite character.
