Japan exclusive Saturn port of DonPachi, distributed by Atlus in April 1996, a conversion of the first Cave shoot from Naomi Kuroda's team and therefore the direct foundation of the entire Cave bullet hell branch that would later blossom with DoDonPachi and then ESP Ra.De. Atlus Japan run was short, jewel case with intact obi, and the historical first link position makes it for Cave enthusiasts a central heritage object. Complete with obi remains sought after and gradually rarer in clean shape than its direct successor.
Memorable bosses
At the origin of the danmaku genre, this first attempt by Cave establishes the art of chain fire and bullet curtains to memorize. Its mechanical guardians, more sober than those of its heirs, already lay the groundwork for a calculated challenge where every move counts. Historically pivotal, it keeps a raw intensity that score lovers rediscover with pleasure.
Is DonPachi still worth playing in 2026?
The first entry of the Cave saga, DonPachi, this vertical shoot lays the foundations of modern danmaku with its chain system and particularly dense patterns. The futuristic military art direction, readable patterns and progressive difficulty make it an absolute historical vertical shoot reference on Saturn. For anyone fond of danmaku or wishing to discover the roots of the genre, an absolutely essential recommendation today still on the Sega machine without hesitation for fans truly here indeed for any newcomer.
