Collector interest

Official GBA reworking of Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, the Famicom foundation of the Kunio saga that became cult abroad under the River City Ransom name. Japanese edition by Atlus, never translated or distributed outside the country, which makes it for Western enthusiasts the only physical way into the remake. Atlus rigid case with a Japanese obi marked EX and a fresh cover with modernised Kunio illustrations. Japan run was short, complete with obi systematically sought after.

An underrated gem

A reinvention of a beat'em up classic with RPG progression, where Kunio roams the streets buying techniques and items between scraps. Released without fanfare, this expanded version suffered from a genre fallen out of fashion. Funny, deep, and packed with content, it'll thrill nostalgic brawler fans who love watching their character grow.

Better with friends

An urban beat-'em-up tinged with RPG, which takes on a delightful dimension with two as you roam the city pummeling rival gangs and sharing the loot. Cooperation dominates: passing cash to buy techniques and leveling up in sync weaves real camaraderie. A touch of rivalry sneaks in when scooping up coins, but the adventure tackled together remains its greatest success.

Is Downtown - Nekketsu Monogatari EX still worth playing in 2026?

This GBA reimagining of the classic River City Ransom signed by Million Co. brings an expanded cast, extra items, fresh techniques and a reworked local co op mode. The Technos beat them up role playing hybrid keeps its rough humor and its progression through absurd purchases, and the pacing benefits from the system's added smoothness. The game is mostly available in Japanese despite a late US localization, but a fan translation exists. A fine cartridge for fans of arcade hybrids and cult games that bypassed Europe.
