PS1 port of the legendary Chrono Trigger, considered the greatest JRPG ever made. Innovative ATB combat system, brilliantly constructed time travel, iconic characters and immortal soundtrack. Some loading times added alongside the bonus animations, but still absolutely essential.

The North American compilation keeps the original sprites and Akira Toriyama's creatures intact, their roundness instantly recognisable, then adds animated sequences produced by Toei Animation. Each era holds its own palette, from ochre prehistory to a ruined future, and the move into animation never betrays the original drawing.
Yasunori Mitsuda built a time travel score in which every era gets its own instrumentation: muffled percussion for prehistory, lutes and flutes for the middle ages, synthetic textures for the future. The main theme keeps returning, transformed each time, and the closing piece retains its full emotional weight on this edition.
Travelling across the ages to avert an apocalypse: such is the wild premise of a tale where every era visited reveals its own dramas. Endearing characters, multiple endings and a plot chiselled by a trio of geniuses make the adventure a model of narrative elegance. Timeless, its story remains an absolute benchmark of the RPG.

A PlayStation port of Square's masterpiece, Chrono Trigger keeps its luminous time travel, its seamless battle system with combined techniques and its multiple endings that make it a peak of the Japanese RPG. Akira Toriyama's character design, the snappy pace and the exemplary writing have not aged. This version adds cutscenes but also loading times absent on cartridge. An absolute classic to recommend to any RPG fan, newcomer and connoisseur alike.
