Story
"Masterful"
A PlayStation port of the sixth Final Fantasy, this Square game preserves the sublime art direction of the 16-bit original. Pixel art of rare finesse, a twilight steampunk world, Yoshitaka Amano's character design and expressive sprites make an operatic, melancholy aesthetic. Detailed towns, mecha and magitek dress a timeless visual fresco, enhanced with added cutscenes. A peak of 16-bit art.

Switching between a dozen heroes whose stories intertwine, equipping Magic through the Espers and watching an opera tip the narrative weaves a fresco where each chapter calls out the next. The customization and the second-act secrets push you to dig into everything. The port adds loading times, but this timeless epic keeps a rare grip on you.

"Massive"
Following a choral epic of around fifteen characters against the empire and then Kefka unfolds a JRPG of rare scope, rich in side quests and secrets. The second, open and well-stocked world multiplies the optional recruits and the optional challenges. That narrative generosity and density of content explain its status as a timeless peak of the genre.

Collector interest

The PlayStation port of Final Fantasy VI, one of the most revered 16-bit classics of the series, released in Europe via a late end-of-cycle compilation. This limited rollout makes it a less common edition than the big contemporary 3D entries. Its interest lies in the chance to own this peak of the sprite era on the machine, in a PAL release of measured print.

Is Final Fantasy VI still worth playing in 2026?

Final Fantasy VI is a Squaresoft masterpiece with a cast of fourteen memorable characters, operatic staging and Nobuo Uematsu's legendary soundtrack. Kefka remains one of the JRPG history's greatest antagonists, and the post-apocalyptic second act stays one of the medium's most striking narrative dares. The PS1 / Anthology port suffers from loading times but content stays intact. An absolute peak today.
