Produced decades after the console itself, this third instalment imposes the same limits on its artwork as the era did and turns them into a style: a deliberately restricted palette, compact sprites, parallax obtained by layering rather than brute force. M2 adds a density of animation the original hardware never had the occasion to show.
Writing for a 1990 chip decades later is an aesthetic choice, and the score owns it: contemporary song structures, chord changes no shooter of the period would have attempted, yet rendered with the original square waves alone. The bass lines run fast to make up for the absence of samples, and the ear believes it hears more voices than there are.
Complete: box, manual and disc/cart very clean. Lightly handled.

Brand-new entry developed in 2020 by M2 specifically for the Aleste Collection, more than twenty-five years after the Game Gear was commercially retired. The Japanese limited edition shipped with a dedicated physical Game Gear Micro mini-cartridge produced in a very small batch, today the most coveted item in the modern Aleste segment. The presence or absence of that micro-cartridge entirely defines pricing for the box set.

Released late as homebrew by M2 in the Aleste Collection compilation, GG Aleste 3 extends the saga with polished production faithful to the 8 bit style. The patterns stay dense, the scoring system refined and the chiptune art direction coherent with its elders. For anyone fond of demanding vertical shooters and wishing to extend the Compile formula in an absolutely authentic spirit, the title is an excellent late surprise. An essential piece for any collector of quality shoots truly here as well today still indeed.
