Description
Space shoot-em-up from the Gradius series, developed by Konami and published in the USA in October 2001. The Vic Viper fights the Bacterian empire through horizontal stages including volcanoes, bubbles and fortresses. Selectable capsule power-up system, colossal bosses and difficulty loops. American version known in Europe as Gradius Advance and in Japan as Gradius Generation.
North American edition of the GBA Gradius, distributed as Gradius Galaxies and clearly separated from the PAL Advance and Japanese Generation versions. That triple regional identification by title has become a study item for Konami Gradius catalogue enthusiasts, who have to spot each variant by its cover and label. Konami USA run was decent, the North American cardboard box is sturdier than the PAL one, and a clean complete copy is a collection standard.
Memorable bosses
Faithful to the series' legacy, this stellar trip punctuates its zones with armored cores and fortresses to dismantle under a hail of fire. The power-up gauge, composed before the assault, makes every preparation a strategic choice. Readable yet formidable, these guardians and their final rematch corridor carry on the great tradition of the horizontal shooter with rigor.
Is Gradius Galaxies still worth playing in 2026?
Gradius Generation, released as Gradius Advance and then Gradius Galaxies depending on the region, stands as one of the most solid horizontal shooters on the GBA. The capsule library to invest into options, shield and speed reads cleanly despite the small resolution, and the stages mix nods to the saga with fresh layouts. The difficulty stays pure Gradius, meaning unforgiving. For fans of classic Konami shooting or anyone seeking a portable entry to the series, this remains a strong pick today.
