Story
★★★★★
"Anecdotal"
Almost photographic reproduction of the cars, finely chiselled circuits and a day/night cycle with dynamic weather: GT5 aims for a clinical realism of cold elegance. The Photo Travel mode showcases vehicles modelled to the millimetre. One caveat: the fleet splits between sumptuously detailed 'Premium' cars and 'Standard' cars carried over from GT4, with a markedly more dated look.

Addictiveness
"Obsessive"
Refining your racing lines by the tenth, collecting hundreds of cars and climbing a demanding career sets up a quest for perfection that always calls for the next race. Earning enough to treat yourself to a new machine rewards every podium. The loading times and the rigid progression grate, but the precision of the driving and the automotive passion hold you for the long haul.
Difficulty
"Balanced"
Lifespan
"Massive"
Gathering everything in one box, the Spec II-patched game and downloadable content included, embraces from the outset the most complete breadth of Polyphony's simulation. A sprawling garage, licences, World Tour championships and the gold hunt on every event sketch a career counted in seasons. For anyone wanting the most generous version of GT5, this edition lays out a near-unlimited reserve of play.

Collector interest
The XL Edition of Gran Turismo 5, a budget complete version bundling the game and its main add-on content for the American market. Printed as a budget reissue, it stays accessible and lightly priced. Its interest is offering the game's most accomplished form in one purchase, a practical complete-version appeal more than collector value tied to scarcity.
Better with friends
An automotive simulation of exemplary rigor, where mastering lines and tuning the cars rewards patience and precision. The competition lives in tenth-of-a-second consistency, far from arcade chaos, in a technical and respectful rivalry. Local split-screen pits two demanding drivers, while the era's online depends on servers whose longevity is no longer guaranteed.
Is Gran Turismo 5 - XL Edition still worth playing in 2026?
The XL Edition is the most generous version of Gran Turismo 5, gathering the game and its add-on content packs for the most complete experience possible. The already colossal vehicle catalogue grows further, and the driving physics of remarkable precision remains the heart of the appeal. Like the Spec II version, this edition fixes part of the launch's structural rough edges and offers an excellent entry point. The title was since followed by GT6, but this edition keeps real value. For the fan of demanding simulation who wants all the GT5 content in one set, it is a solid choice.
