The characters move into volume but keep their old grammar. Modelled in three dimensions, they nonetheless animate in carefully studied jolts, hold an objection pose for exactly as long as needed, freeze dead at the end of a gesture, just like the still images they replace. Around them, hand-drawn animated scenes punctuate the high points without ever changing register.
The emotion-reading mechanic adds a sonic layer the series had not had. While a witness speaks, several contradictory feelings each manifest through a distinct timbre, a tense string for fear, a brief brass stab for anger, an isolated note for sadness, and you have to spot the one that has no business being there. The score thus becomes a piece of evidence you listen to.
Back at the bar, Phoenix faces a dark age of justice alongside Athena, whose past conceals a buried trauma. The cases, more emotional than ever, weave guilt, grief and hope with finesse. This blend of courtroom tension and humanity gives the tale a lasting force.

Gyakuten Saiban 5 is the original Japanese release of Dual Destinies, available in box form only in Japan. It is the series' sole known physical existence on cartridge under that numbering, since the West received only a digital release. The Japanese sleeve by Tatsuro Iwamoto signals the polished graphical return of the series and stands as a self-contained reason to buy.

Released in 2013 on 3DS and known in the West as Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, Capcom's project relaunches the courtroom adventure series after a long absence, moving to three dimensions and bringing together Phoenix Wright and new lawyers. The system of investigation then pleading, where you expose the contradictions of testimonies, gains the Mood Matrix, which analyses a witness's emotions. The humour filled writing and the twisting cases carry the story. The linearity and a sometimes melodramatic tone divide. An excellent entry of the saga, recommended for fans of investigative visual novels.
