The dialogue busts carry all of the comedy here: every character has a set of blunt expressions, raised eyebrow, mouth in a circumflex, eyes cut down to two strokes, swapped in time with the lines. The layout keeps the lower half of the screen for text and lets those poses fill the rest.
Every major figure gets a theme of their own, short and instantly identifiable: pompous brass for the pretender to the throne, an acid waltz for the princess, a dragging motif for the reluctant hero. The dialogue scenes chain those motifs, so a character's arrival is heard one line before it is read.
Bound to a curse gnawing at his world, a young man sets off with a wilful princess on a quest as zany as it is touching. The tone, ever irreverent, knows how to make room for unexpected bursts of sincerity. This demonic comedy brilliantly extends the narrative verve of the series.
