The Japanese version draws the eye to its management screens: the character sheet fills the whole window, with a decorated frame, tight typography and icons that separate weapons from spells. The system of consuming monster flesh comes with a table of transformations whose mere consultation is part of the pleasure.
What sets this edition apart to the ear is its use of emptiness: long exploration passages unfold over a single repeated bass line, with no melody and no percussion, and the entry of a full theme invariably signals a change of scale in the story. The piece accompanying the top of the tower is the barest of all.
