The Japanese edition foregrounds the strangeness of the kingdom being visited: pod-shaped architecture, bulbous vegetation, inhabitants with stretched silhouettes belonging to no earlier platform game. The palette, greener and more acid than the usual kingdom's, signals at once that the brothers are on foreign ground.
The musical writing plays the comic exotic card: Latin rhythms, whistling, wind instruments with sonorities unusual for the series, setting up an elsewhere in sound to match the strangeness of the scenery. The town themes stay short and singable, and recur often enough to become the landmarks of the journey.

Leading Mario and Luigi in tandem, each brother on his own button, turns exploration and turn-based combat into a feat of timing as funny as it is demanding. Well-placed counterattacks, mini-games and secrets reward your skill and revive the urge to advance. A few back-and-forths weigh on it, but this humor and this duo of controls keep a constant pull.

Diving into the original Japanese release means the same teeming adventure across the Beanbean Kingdom, dotted with towns to explore, dungeons built on paired actions and timing-driven battles. As the series' founding pivot, this title keeps its name as a generous portable RPG that players happily stretch out over many sessions.

Excellent for fans of accessible yet dense RPGs, and a GBA classic that remains immediate to pick up and replay.
