Description
Japanese edition of MediEvil under the Yomigaetta Gallowmere no Yuusha title, action adventure where Sir Daniel Fortesque, a hero killed in battle, defends Gallowmere from the undead invasion. SCE Cambridge Studio builds Gallowmere like a Halloween ride: blue lit graveyards, pumpkin fields, phosphorescent marshes and a village asleep under an enormous moon. Sir Daniel Fortesque, jaw hanging loose and one socket empty, carries the macabre humour on his own, and every monster looks drawn for a picture book aimed at badly behaved children.
Andrew Barnabas and Paul Arnold write the score of a friendly horror film: bounding strings, mocking brass, harpsichord and children's choirs for the haunted stretches. Every zone gets its own theme, from the graveyard gallop to the creaking waltzes of Zarok's halls, and the whole thing keeps a smile at the corner of its mouth.
The best joke in the game is its hero: Daniel Fortesque fell to the very first arrow at the battle of Gallowmere, then was promoted to saviour by the official legend. Woken a century later by Zarok's spell, he sets out to earn after the fact the glory invented for him, and to finally deserve his place in the Hall of Heroes.

The Japanese version of MediEvil, under its extended local title, far rarer than the Western editions in a market little receptive to this Anglo gothic humor. This Japanese edition appeals to collectors of cross-region releases of a mascot dear to Western players. Its desirability rests on this limited local run, noticeably harder to find than the PAL or American versions.

A one-eyed skeleton in a dented helm, Sir Daniel Fortesque strikes a pose as a tinpot knight against a gothic graveyard fog: the game's macabre humor lands at first glance. Earthy browns and a Tim Burton-ish caricature line announce a good-natured spooky adventure. Funny and atmospheric, it sells a hero as clumsy as he is endearing.
