Description
Drilling puzzle game developed by Namco and published in Europe in August 2001. Susumu Hori drills vertically through layers of colored blocks, destroying them when they match those above, while managing an air gauge that depletes as he descends. Several modes including Mission and Time Attack, increasing difficulty levels, score bonuses for chaining destructions and characters to unlock. Sequel to the original Mr. Driller with new mechanics.

The visual principle is absolutely clear: four block colours, no superfluous texture, a tiny character always visible thanks to his red suit. The whole screen is taken up by the column of ground to be drilled, and the only added information, the air gauge, sits at the side so as never to cover the action area.
The soundtrack adopts a cheerful register that happily contradicts the game's urgency: skipping melodies, xylophone and bright keyboard timbres, a steady tempo that never panics even as the air runs out. That gap between the player's alarm and the music's unconcern makes up a good part of the game's character.
