Onimusha Warlords is still a textbook samurai survival adventure. Striking fixed cameras, lean story and katana combat that feels wonderfully crunchy. Short, intense and an absolute must.

The Western version of the first Onimusha, subtitled Warlords, which introduced the world to Capcom's blend of survival horror and feudal swordplay fronted by a film actor. Still common in Europe and the United States, its appeal lies in its role as the gateway to a cult series rather than scarcity. An affordable piece for anyone wanting to start the Onimusha line in their language.

Is Onimusha - Warlords still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2001 on PS2 and known in the West as Onimusha - Warlords, Capcom's project transposes the Resident Evil survival horror formula into the feudal Japan of the late sixteenth century. The samurai Samanosuke faces demonic hordes with the blade, absorbing the souls of his enemies to strengthen his weapons. The sumptuous pre rendered backgrounds and the cinematic staging install a polished atmosphere. The controls inherited from survival horror and the short length betray their era. A founding classic of Japanese action, recommended for fans of swordplay and of historical fantasy with a dark supernatural edge.
