Perfect Dark pushes everything GoldenEye laid down even further. Elite AI, cinematic staging, dense missions and a multiplayer of dizzying variety thanks to its sim opponents. The engine groans, but the ambition and gameplay precision still stand as an absolute masterclass today.

Rare and Nintendo North American May 2000 pressing, spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007 and technical peak of the Rare studio. The original US cartridge requires the Memory Expansion Pak to access the solo mode, an unusual condition that turned it into a central promotional argument. The initial run keeps the Mr. Blonde character option in the panel, removed by the next revision. A major historical piece for Rare enthusiasts documenting the studio's N64 peak.

Is Perfect Dark still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2000 on Nintendo 64, Rare's project is the spiritual heir of GoldenEye, a first person shooter of staggering technical ambition for the console. Agent Joanna Dark crosses a futuristic espionage campaign with objectives that vary by difficulty, backed by an arsenal of wild inventiveness and clever gadgets. The multiplayer mode, rich in options and bots, was a benchmark of split screen gaming. The flattering resolution at the cost of an unstable framerate and dated controls betray the age. A peak of console shooting of its time, recommended for fans of infiltration and of multiplayer fun.
