Sublime horizontal shooter with R-Type vibe in SNK sauce, charged force mechanic and sumptuous stages. Demanding but fair difficulty. One of the most striking shooters on Neo Geo.

Collector interest

Western Neo Geo CD port of Pulstar, an Aicom horizontal shoot 'em up often compared to R-Type and held as one of the genre's peaks on the machine. The disc restores Harumi Fujita's orchestral soundtrack in CD-Audio quality, lost on the AES cartridge. The North American pressing, released into a limited Western Neo Geo CD market, is markedly rarer than the Japanese Aicom editions, a top target for CD shmup and Aicom enthusiasts.

Memorable bosses

A spiritual cousin to R-Type, this horizontal shooter dazzles with its prerendered guardians of organic bearing — half machine, half creature — sculpted in CGI rare for the era. Facing them calls for composure, careful handling of the front pod and patience against fearsome patterns. Their biomechanical aesthetic and taut difficulty make them unsung peaks of the genre.

An underrated gem

Crafted by Irem veterans, this horizontal shooter pushes the R-Type legacy to dazzling heights, with sumptuous pre-rendered backgrounds and ferocious difficulty. Its demands and its period price tag reserved it for an elite few. Patient shmup diehards, ready to die a thousand times, will see it as a high point of the genre on the machine.

Is Pulstar still worth playing in 2026?

Pulstar is a gorgeous horizontal shooter, R-Type with an SNK twist, courtesy of Aicom. A charged Force mechanic, sumptuous backgrounds and a biomechanical bestiary of rare elegance build one of the prettiest shooters in the Neo Geo catalogue. The difficulty is demanding but fair, the pacing tense without smothering. On Neo Geo CD, loading between stages weighs a little, but the orchestral CD soundtrack is a treat. For retro horizontal shmup fans and Irem-inspired aesthetics lovers, still one of the system's most striking shooters today.
