The Puyo are not mere blobs: each colour carries a face whose expression changes at the moment it vanishes, turning a chain into a small performance. In versus mode, portraits of Arle and her opponents appear on either side of the board and react to the score gap, adding a layer of comedy to the calculation.
Each opponent brings a theme, short and instantly identifiable, which serves characterisation as much as the player's memory. The tempo climbs as the stack nears the top, and the music drops back to calm as soon as a chain clears the screen, so the state of the match is heard before it is even looked at.
