A late Virgin European run and gun, brutally hard but brilliantly animated. Limited edition, a lesser known technical peak on SNES.

A technical tour de force by Manfred Trenz, this rare title blends frantic run-and-gun and shoot-'em-up phases with no downtime. Swarms of enemies, massive bosses and a breakneck pace demand solid reflexes as much as quick screen-reading. Short but intense, it earned a reputation as a difficult, sought-after gem, as rewarding as it is grueling for those who tame it.
The official modern Limited Run Games (US) reissue of Rendering Ranger R2, the 1995 Super Famicom shooter from the Factor 5 / Manfred Trenz team, one of the most expensive Super Famicom shmups in the world in its original form. A limited, numbered pressing, this version gives access to the game without paying the Japanese import grail, on a compatible cartridge with careful LRG packaging. Desirability rests on LRG's deliberately short run and on dual demand from LRG and shmup collectors, not on the status of the Japanese original.
An underrated gem
A technical showcase from the father of Turrican, it alternates beefy run-and-gun and space shooting with a fluidity and finish that still astonish. Released only in Japan and pressed in very few copies, it became a specialists' secret. Its intensity and craftsmanship make it a tour de force for fans of demanding action.
Is Rendering Ranger R2 still worth playing in 2026?
Never released outside Japan, Rendering Ranger R2 by Manfred Trenz and Virgin Interactive is one of the most technically ambitious shoot up run and gun titles on the SFC. The game alternates horizontal shoot up phases with on foot sections in R-Type Leo style, and pushes the palette with massive sprites and supple scrolling. The cartridge has become rare and pricey. No translation needed. An absolute recommendation for shoot purists, SFC tech feat hunters and Trenz post Turrican fans.
