Saints Row 2 expands the base with a denser Stilwater, welcome co-op and far more confident humour. The result finally finds its balance between serious and burlesque, and it stands as the cornerstone that announces the saga's later gleeful detours.

Description
Open-world action by Volition and THQ, October 2008. The Saints Boss rebuilds the gang in Stilwater after prison and battles rival gangs and corrupt corporations. Greatly expanded open world, deep character and apartment customisation and more pronounced humour than the first. Saints Row sequel bringing much more freedom.

The character editor becomes the main visual argument: sex, build, walk, voice and even facial details are set separately, so the gang leader can be an obese pensioner as easily as a colossus in a three-piece suit. The rest of the game accepts that silhouette without ever commenting on it, and every story scene replays with the body you built.

A questionable morality

Running a gang that becomes a commercial brand and then frankly presidential lets you get away with just about anything: heists, deranged urban destruction and weapons each more absurd than the last. The tongue-in-cheek tone is so heavy that you quickly forget the lengthening rap sheet, savoring this grand criminal playground as an avowed parody rather than a thug's handbook.

Is Saints Row 2 still worth playing in 2026?

A sequel from Volition, Saints Row 2 asserts the series' identity by pushing the excess, the humour and the freedom of customisation well beyond its model, in an enlarged Stilwater ripe for chaos. The madness of the side activities, the open world co-op and the unabashed tone make it a gleeful, generous sandbox. The uneven technical presentation tempers the whole. An excellent criminal open world for fans of full on urban chaos and wild two player co-op in a big playground.
