This box gathers the first two entries, more down-to-earth than the sequels. The art direction foregrounds the crew itself: recruits you rally who follow the boss through the street, a gang visible as escort, districts retaken in the Saints' colour. Far from the excess to come, the image cultivates a turf-war aesthetic, where the physical presence of the clique makes up the whole scenery.
The music of these origins rests on the radio of a gang city, which the player shapes to his own hand. Assembling your own station, picking the tracks that will pace the rides, amounts to composing a personal soundtrack at the wheel. The score barely exists on its own: it is born of the listener's choice, foreshadowing the series' taste for the licensed track.
The first entry tells a rise from nothing. A nameless recruit of a fledgling gang, the hero climbs the ranks of the Saints by retaking Stilwater from three rival crews, district by district. Before the sequels' absurd escalation, the story is a classic street conquest, where one makes a name by force of fist in a very concrete turf war.

Running a gang that becomes a commercial brand and then frankly presidential lets you get away with just about anything: heists, deranged urban destruction and weapons each more absurd than the last. The tongue-in-cheek tone is so heavy that you quickly forget the lengthening rap sheet, savoring this grand criminal playground as an avowed parody rather than a thug's handbook.
