The conversion shrinks the fighters but preserves the essence of their silhouettes: Haohmaru's kimono, the shield warrior's armour, the avenging samurai's red outfit. The backgrounds keep their Japanese landscapes, a bridge under cherry blossom, a mountainside temple, a harbour at sunset, with obvious palette work.
The original themes move onto the FM chip with their traditional instruments reinterpreted: shakuhachi flute, plucked strings, taiko percussion marking the strong beats. Each fighter keeps his own melody, and the arrangements favour the clarity of the main line over density of orchestration.
