The collection's first volume takes a 1987 pioneer and pulls it into the present. The Master System's wireframe corridors become textured 3D dungeons walked in first person, and the heroes, once reduced to a few pixels, gain fine-lined portraits in the manner of anime. The modernization stays reverent, however, faithfully following the structure of the original game.
The soundtrack revives the original melodies in modern dress. The themes composed for the Master System's sound chip, catchy despite their simplicity, are re-recorded with real timbres, gaining warmth and shine without losing their familiar tune. The whole stays cheerful and bright, in the image of a youthful adventure, and lets founding refrains be rediscovered in a flattering light.
To replay this story is to go back to the genre's sources. Long before the console RPG settled into convention, Phantasy Star already built a coherent science-fiction universe and entrusted its epic to a young heroine, a rare boldness for the time. The remake gives this fable a second life and lets you gauge how new this archetype of the initiatory quest, commonplace today, seemed in 1987.
