The four Phantasy Star games appear in their original, un-retouched graphics, from the Master System's angular pixels to the Mega Drive's finer sprites. Seeing these games as they first appeared, with their period colors and limits, makes it an archival object faithful to the letter of each version.
On the audio side, the compilation keeps the original tracks as they came out of Sega's chips. You rediscover the signature of the Mega Drive's FM synthesizer, timbres at once metallic and warm, and the battle and dungeon themes that became emblematic of the series. Rendered without rearrangement, this sonic material stands as testimony to what 16-bit Sega sounded like at its peak.
