Raizing vertical shmup with stylized Japanese design. Solid and fast-paced gameplay, memorable bosses. Less known than Battle Garegga by the same developer but equivalent quality. A rare gem for demanding Saturn shmup fans.

Collector interest

Shienryuu is a vertical shoot-em-up released on Saturn in Japan, tied to the Raizing lineage whose technical flair appeals to shmup devotees. Its collecting interest lies in Japanese Saturn exclusivity, the console being a shmup favourite thanks to its 2D strength, and in its standing as a little-known, rarely reissued title that specialists track within the machine's Japanese shooter catalogue. The shooter segment remains one of the most durable demand drivers on import Saturn.

Is Shienryuu still worth playing in 2026?

A vertical shoot-em-up from Raizing, Shienryuu sends a ship against enemy fleets in futuristic backdrops, with a demanding shooting and lock system and a controlled rise in intensity. The readability of the action, the density of patterns and the technical pleasure of scoring make it a solid, snappy shmup, faithful to the studio's recognized craft. The difficulty stays tough and the length classic for the genre. An estimable pick for fans of retro vertical shooting and enthusiasts of Raizing shmups.
