Shinobi returns on PS2 with a sharp, demanding style. Snappy 3D action, a living scarf and spectacular finishers. Brutal difficulty, but huge reward for the dedicated.

A 3D reboot of the Sega franchise, this game is recognized at once by its hero's red scarf. The ninja Hotsuma streaks through a post-apocalyptic, gothic Tokyo, dark ruins infested with demons, and his long scarlet cloth, forever in motion, traces behind him a visual signature that underlines the blinding speed of his movement.
To accompany a frantic slaughter, the soundtrack runs on electronica and rock. Hammered beats, aggressive basses and nervy guitars sustain a constant energy, cut for the blade's speed and the demands of a combat that grants no respite. The music pushes the player to kill relentlessly, as the cursed sword Akujiki, which must ceaselessly feed on souls, in fact compels, making the sonic tempo the very engine of the fury.
The Western release of Shinobi, SEGA's revival of the ninja license as a nervy 3D action game, marked by its formidable difficulty, its cursed sword that devours its wielder's soul and its animated scarf become emblematic. Still accessible, its desirability rests on this status as a demanding, stylish revival of a historic series rather than scarcity. A prime piece for fans of punishing old-school action of the PS2 era.
An underrated gem
This reboot demands total mastery: your blade devours your own life, forcing you to chain victories relentlessly just to survive. Its ferocious difficulty and sometimes unkind camera split opinion. But its speed of execution, whirling scarf and pure rigour make it a treat for fans of snappy action who like to suffer.
Is Shinobi still worth playing in 2026?
Released in 2002 on PS2, Sega's project resurrects the ninja legend into a demanding action game built on speed and retribution. The cursed sword Akujiki, which feeds on the souls of enemies or else drains the life of the hero Hotsuma, imposes an aggressive rhythm where you chain eliminations in a single pass to trigger the Tate, a fatal and stylish execution. The dark art direction and the neo Japanese aesthetic stand out. The capricious camera and an abrupt difficulty put off. A singular and nervous piece, recommended for fans of punishing action and of stylised ninja fantasy that rewards aggression.
