Shinobi returns on PS2 with a sharp, demanding style. Snappy 3D action, a living scarf and spectacular finishers. Brutal difficulty, but huge reward for the dedicated.

Description
A Sega and Overworks action game released in 2002, a 3D reboot of the original Shinobi franchise from the 80s-90s. The ninja Hotsuma traverses a post-apocalyptic demon-infested Tokyo, his Akujiki sword absorbing souls to stay active. Extremely fast and nervous combat, dark gothic aesthetics and Sega's signature merciless difficulty. An ambitious, sometimes demanding reboot.

Collector interest

The Korean edition of Shinobi, from a market with narrow physical distribution and markedly rarer than the Japanese and Western versions. For this SEGA revival already valued by fans of demanding action, the Korean provenance fills a hard slot in a regional set. Its desirability rests above all on this real geographic scarcity, placing it well above the game's other printings.

An underrated gem

This reboot demands total mastery: your blade devours your own life, forcing you to chain victories relentlessly just to survive. Its ferocious difficulty and sometimes unkind camera split opinion. But its speed of execution, whirling scarf and pure rigour make it a treat for fans of snappy action who like to suffer.

Is Shinobi still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2002 on PS2, Sega's project resurrects the ninja legend into a demanding action game built on speed and retribution. The cursed sword Akujiki, which feeds on the souls of enemies or else drains the life of the hero Hotsuma, imposes an aggressive rhythm where you chain eliminations in a single pass to trigger the Tate, a fatal and stylish execution. The dark art direction and the neo Japanese aesthetic stand out. The capricious camera and an abrupt difficulty put off. A singular and nervous piece, recommended for fans of punishing action and of stylised ninja fantasy that rewards aggression.
