The blue hedgehog rediscovers 2D with undimmed fire: tearing along at full speed, looping the loops and triggering springs delivers a gleeful sense of speed. The snappy levels invite you to memorise the routes to chase the perfect run. Colourful, smooth and fiercely snappy, a successful return to roots that recalls why Sonic gets you running.
European PAL edition of the first Sonic Advance, distributed by Sega Europe in March 2002 as the first Sonic built for Nintendo hardware after the Dreamcast halt, an explicit signal of Sega's move to third party publisher status. European cardboard box is fragile, and the historical weight of that transition turns a PAL identified clean complete copy into a cultural archive object for Sonic Team enthusiasts. Sega Europe run was broad but structural demand stays constant.
Is Sonic Advance still worth playing in 2026?
The first Sonic crafted specifically for the GBA by Dimps, Sonic Advance brings back the 2D feel of the Mega Drive classics and adapts it smartly to the small screen. The level design stays readable despite the speed, the playable cast adds tactical variation and the Tiny Chao Garden connectivity sprinkles a charming collector thread. The colorful art direction and soundtrack still work today. For fans of 2D Sonic or anyone wanting to discover the series outside of the Mega Drive, this is probably the best starting point on the GBA.
