Collector interest

The Western release of Soul Edge, Namco's weapon-based fighting game that launched the line leading to Soul Calibur, renamed Soul Blade outside Japan. This name change and its status as the starting point of a major versus saga make it a piece of historical interest. Still fairly widespread, its appeal lies in this founding lineage rather than scarcity.

Better with friends

A weapon-based fighter of rare elegance, where free movement and well-timed guard impacts make duels deep without putting off newcomers. The competition rewards reads and positioning, and ring-outs add a strategic kick to the face-offs. Gorgeous and readable, it chains tense clashes and makes you want to try the whole cast across evenings with friends.

Is Soul Blade still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 1996 on PS1 in Japan as Soul Edge and in 1997 in the West as Soul Blade, Namco's project brought armed versus fighting into the third dimension. The vertical and horizontal attack system, the appearance of the Edge Master mode and the readability of strikes install the foundations that will durably irrigate Soul Calibur. The art direction mixes imaginary countries and eras, and the music remains memorable. The modelling has aged. Recommended today for armed versus fighting devotees and for Namco collectors curious about the founding chapter of a long lineage on Sony's first home console.
