Story
"Anecdotal"
Compile dresses its puzzle in the characters of Madou Monogatari: Arle and her Carbuncle, round silhouettes with big eyes, opponents typed to the point of caricature. The portraits react live to the state of the match, grimaces included, and that side pantomime remains the real show while the blocks fall.
Gameplay
"Masterful"
A faithful conversion of the cult arcade version, this entry introduces the offset system that changes everything: you take hits the better to counterattack. Building enormous chains to turn the duel around becomes an art. The pinnacle of the formula, it retains a strategic depth and a tension that make it one of the most accomplished competitive puzzlers.
Fun
"From the very first seconds"
The sequel revolutionises competitive puzzling with the counter, which lets you cancel the nuisance blobs sent by your opponent and turn a duel around to the last second. This mechanic makes every clash a snappy, strategic tug-of-war. Feeling one chain counter the other delivers an incomparable glee. Deep, tense and timeless, a peak of the genre.
Addictiveness
"Obsessive"
The added counter mechanic turns every chain into a battle of wits where you bide your time to overwhelm your opponent all the better. Attempting a longer chain, reversing a losing round or climbing the difficulty endlessly revives the urge to play on. Deeper than the first, this puzzle keeps a strategic tension that grips for the long haul in versus.

Collector interest

The Japanese Super Famicom version of Compile/Banpresto's Super Puyo Puyo Tsuu from 1995, Japan-exclusive. The cart is culturally important because it introduces the 'Tsuu' system (complex chains) that would become the modern Puyo Puyo competitive standard. Intact boxed CIB with cardboard sleeve and illustrated Banpresto manual has become a structuring target for Compile/Puyo collectors, and the cote climbs hard, sustained by physical scarcity and by the canonical status of Tsuu in competitive play.

Is Super Puyo Puyo Tsuu still worth playing in 2026?

Super Puyo Puyo 2, namely Super Puyo Puyo Tsuu and its Remix, is probably the peak of the Compile formula on the SFC. The major novelty is the counterattack, namely the ability to partially cancel incoming blockers by sending some back, which totally reshapes the versus dynamic. The cast widens and solo and co op modes diversify. Recommended for the best SFC Puyo Puyo and to versus puzzle fans ready to invest in long chain learning to rival at high level.
