Rare Western port of the Japanese Hudson JRPG, with a Japanese fantasy atmosphere and turn-based combat. Polished art direction, traditional but well-handled story and lengthy runtime. For fans of exotic Japanese RPGs who can accept a distinctly old-school flavour.

Is Tengai Makyou II - Manji Maru still worth playing in 2026?

Re released in 2003 on GameCube in Japan, this remake of a great Hudson RPG transposes the original PC Engine adventure into a reworked version. The singular setting, a fantasised medieval Japan seen through an imaginary Western gaze, gives Manji Maru's quest a unique flavour. The turn based combat, the humour and the staging keep a certain charm. The lack of Western localisation closes the door to many, yet devotees of classic Japanese RPG and the curious about this cult license find a generous work to rediscover.
