The series' fantasy Japan is rendered here with rare density: villages of crowded lanes, shrines, harbours, snowy mountains, and above all a day night cycle and seasons that genuinely repaint the world. The cartridge holds a clock, so the landscape follows the player's own calendar, an idea from which the image draws every benefit.
The score mixes traditional Japanese instrumentation with broader arrangements: flutes, festival drums and plucked strings on one side, almost orchestral travelling themes on the other. The real luxury is that the music changes with the hour and the season, so a single village never quite sounds the same two days running.
The story takes up the frame of Japanese folk tales, a hero setting out to rid the country of creatures from elsewhere, but the internal clock gives it unusual thickness: festivals fall on their real dates, some characters only show up at certain hours, and the world keeps going through its year whether you play or not.
