Story

"Solid"
The XCOM base is shown in cross-section, an ant farm of labs and dormitories expanded cell by cell, an open homage to the mythic screen of the 1994 game. Above ground, Firaxis modernizes the B movie: bulging saucers, slender sectoids, scientists' orange jumpsuits, a whole sixties ufology imagery repainted with the seriousness of a war-room thriller.
Michael McCann installs a war-room tension: icy electronics, choirs processed into abstraction, pulses that count the turns more than they accompany them. The most effective ritual remains the Skyranger boarding, a few muffled bars before the drop that raise apprehension better than any image, because you know some soldiers will not come back.

Positioning your squad tile after tile, knowing one mistake can cost a cherished soldier, sets up a tactical tension where each successful mission calls for the next. Developing your base and improving your troops reward the strategy. Its randomness and its difficulty sometimes frustrate, but the attachment to your recruits and the "just one more mission" make every game hard to wrap up.

Each tactical mission is only a sliver of a campaign that stretches far past the visible story. Running the XCOM base, climbing the tech tree and raising soldiers whose deaths are permanent turn every playthrough into a personal investment. Replayability, fuelled by Ironman difficulty and branching strategic choices, is why players keep starting fresh campaigns long after the credits.
XCOM Enemy Unknown, Firaxis's revival of turn-based strategy against an alien invasion, hailed as a masterful return of a genre classic on console. Still common, its desirability rests on this successful resurrection and a lasting demand rather than scarcity. A prime piece for strategy fans of the console, valued for its tactical depth and tension.
Better with friends
Turn-based strategy of exemplary tension, whose multiplayer mode pits two commanders building their squad before clashing tile by tile. The competition is cerebral and merciless: anticipating, managing cover and striking at the right moment decides everything, the slightest error paid in full. Niche but deep, and reliant on uncertain servers, it offers strategists duels of rare intensity.
Is XCOM - Enemy Unknown still worth playing in 2026?
Released in 2012 on Xbox 360, Firaxis' XCOM Enemy Unknown brilliantly resurrects the legendary turn based strategy series, pitting a secret organisation against an alien invasion. The management of the base and research, coupled with tense tactical clashes where every soldier counts and can die permanently, creates a rare tension and attachment. The cover system and the constant risk reward thought. The pad adaptation is exemplary. The difficulty can be merciless. But the balance is masterful. For fans of demanding turn based strategy, this title keeps a strong appeal today.
