The North Atlantic replaces the Caribbean: a steel-grey sea cluttered with floating ice the hull pushes aside or strikes, mist erasing the horizon line, northern lights above snowbound colonies. The cold green and white palette opposes point by point the luminous blues of the previous entry, and sailing becomes a matter of visibility.
The finest device is the reversal of motifs: themes tied to the Assassins for years return here on the Templar side, played for the man hunting them, so familiar melodies change camp without changing notes. The French colonies also bring fiddle tunes and voyageur songs, absent from the Mediterranean entries.
Shay Cormac leaves the Brotherhood because he watched it trigger an earthquake while hunting an artifact, and crosses over to the Templars with the convictions of a man trying to prevent a disaster. The player therefore hunts his former brothers one by one, finding among the targets faces met in earlier entries. Few series accept dismantling their own side like this.
