A direct Japanese sequel the West never got, a real shame as it closes the saga beautifully. Refined card system, the world still hanging in the clouds, Sakuraba on top form. Reserved for patient importers.

The dazzling skies of the first game give way to an earthier palette, where ancient ruins and primal worlds are dressed in deep, weighty colours. The painterly stroke remains but gains gravity and maturity, matching a story of origins. This prequel imposes a dense visual atmosphere that lingers in connoisseurs' memories.

Collector interest

Baten Kaitos II Hajimari no Tsubasa to Kamigami no Shishi is the Japanese edition of Monolith Soft/Tri-Crescendo's JRPG, sequel to Baten Kaitos. Collector value comes from the Japanese version remaining rarer than the Western one (released as Baten Kaitos Origins only in the US) and from this sequel never being released in box in Europe.

An underrated gem

A prequel that stayed locked in Japan, this follow-up refines the first game's card combat and unfurls an ambitious tale carried by a memorable twist. The lack of a European localization doomed it to obscurity. For patient J-RPG devotees ready to cope with the language barrier, it's a forgotten treasure.

Is Baten Kaitos II - Hajimari no Tsubasa to Kamigami no Shishi still worth playing in 2026?

A prequel to the first Baten Kaitos, Origins streamlines the magnus card system while preserving the sublime art direction of floating islands by tri-Crescendo. Combat stays tactical and more accessible, the narrative gains coherence and Motoi Sakuraba's soundtrack remains splendid. Released late and rarely imported to Europe, the title keeps a high collector value but richly rewards the hunt. For anyone who enjoys JRPGs with original systems and contemplative worlds, a strong recommendation with a flavour all of its own.
