The first Breath of Fire lays the groundwork with its transformations and gentle vibe. Dated now, but charming for old school fans.

The NTSC starting point of a major Capcom saga, this first Breath of Fire was localized in the States by Squaresoft, a publisher crossover that gives it real historical flavor among JRPG fans. Its appeal rests on that foundational role, the dragon transformations and its old-school aura. The cart circulates easily loose; value crystallizes on a complete copy with an unwarped cardboard box, map and manual, and climbs sharply for a clean sealed piece.

Is Breath of Fire still worth playing in 2026?

Capcom's first in house RPG, Breath of Fire lays the saga's foundations with its dragon hero Ryu, companions with unique powers and a classic heroic fantasy structure. The colourful sprites, the transformations and the bright mood keep their charm, even if the combat system stays very traditional and the pace occasionally slow. Its availability on modern services eases rediscovery. An ideal starting point for fans of 16 bit RPGs and of the series.
