You fall endlessly, and all the genius lives in that descent. The gunboots double as weapon and brake, the monochrome palette is gorgeous, and every run reads in a flash. A vertical roguelike about as addictive as they come.

An underrated gem

Downwell has a reputation among roguelike fans, but many wrongly file it among throwaway mobile trifles. Its genius lies in one tiny idea pushed to the limit: firing beneath your feet to slow your fall while hammering enemies, in a vertical format of flawless clarity. Minutes to grasp, hours to master, perfect for short but intense sessions.

Is Downwell still worth playing in 2026?

Downwell rests on one brilliant idea and a fat-free execution: descend, shoot beneath your feet, never stop. Its frantic verticality remains one of the purest sensations in modern arcade design, and its monochrome palette has not aged a day. Each fall restarts the engine, and reading enemies below you in a flash builds an addictive tension. It is demanding, sometimes unfair on a bad roll, but always fair over the long run. Perfect on portable Switch for express runs. A small design masterpiece proving one mechanic is enough when it is perfect.
