Descending a generated dungeon, juggling hunger and items and then losing it all on death sets up a roguelike tension where every attempt starts from scratch but a little wiser. Tracking down a weapon, identifying a scroll or pushing one floor deeper rekindles the urge to try your luck again. The penalty is harsh, but this unpredictability stays furiously addictive.
