The very first Grand Theft Auto on PS1, in 2D isometric view. Founding the criminal sandbox genre, it establishes total freedom in a simulated city. Brutal, addictive and controversial. A foundational historical title that defined an entire genre, imperfect but visionary.

A questionable morality

Seen from above, the city is just one big playground where everything is up for borrowing: you commandeer passersby's cars, string together jobs for the mob and settle setbacks with a bat or a pistol. The criminal climb plays out as a high score to beat, and the urban diorama soaks up your antics without you ever pausing a single second to feel guilty.

Is G.T.A - Grand Theft Auto still worth playing in 2026?

The first entry in DMA Design's cult saga, Grand Theft Auto lays the foundations of the open world crime game with its top down view, its freedom to roam three cities and its provocative dark humour. Stealing cars, chaining missions and fleeing the police sets up a jubilant loop of transgression for its time. The crude production and the stiff handling strongly show their age. A historical milestone to recommend for the curious about the series' origins and fans of games with pioneering freedom.
