Collector interest

North American (NTSC-U) edition of Mortal Kombat, a NetherRealm revival bringing the gory fighting back in 2.5D with its spectacular fatalities and a generous story mode, relaunching the license with flair. Present without excess in North America, its interest lies in this successful return of a violent versus classic rather than wide distribution. A piece valued by fans of bloody, accessible fighting.

Better with friends

A gleefully gory brawler whose over-the-top fatalities and punchy pace make duels a joyful release. The competition stays readable for novices while offering depth to the devoted, in a rivalry that blends technique and provocation. Local versus raises a delicious tension, punctuated by spectacular finishers that draw as many shouts as laughs.

A questionable morality

At the close of a won fight, the game invites you to finish off your opponent with a “fatality,” a choreographed killing of almost virtuoso gory inventiveness. You execute the button combo with care, proud to land a spectacular dismemberment, without dwelling too much on the fact that you're mostly drilling the art of theatrical murder.

Is Mortal Kombat still worth playing in 2026?

Released in 2011 on Xbox 360, NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat marks the series' triumphant return to its roots, in two dimensions, with embraced violence and gameplay of formidable depth. The combat system, nervy and readable, the super gauge and the spectacular fatalities revive all the flavour of the licence. The Story mode, ambitious and cinematic, is a model for the genre. The colossal solo content still impresses. The shutdown of the online servers limits the competitive side. But the local and solo stay excellent. For fans of versus fighting and gore spectacle, this title keeps a strong appeal today.
