Hideo Kojima visual novel, spiritual prequel to Snatcher. Mature and captivating police sci-fi narrative. Graphics are remarkable for the era. Japanese barrier is significant but Kojima fans will find it worth the effort.

Hideo Kojima transplants American crime-film imagery into a space colony: angular silhouettes inherited from eighties Japanese animation, orbital station sets in cold tones, and cinematic framing that cuts every scene like a storyboard. The still portraits gain presence from heavily worked shadows, and the whole thing owns its kinship with buddy movies.

Original Japanese Saturn edition of Policenauts, distributed by Konami in September 1996, Hideo Kojima's second narrative project after Snatcher with a space neo noir mood and a full voice cast. Konami Japan run was short, jewel case with intact obi marked Policenauts, and the complete absence of an official Western localization despite the later fan translation makes the JP Saturn version for Kojima enthusiasts a targeted archive object. Complete with obi clearly valued among Kojima Productions completists.

An underrated gem

Before Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima delivered this science-fiction thriller about astronaut cops, carried by filmic storytelling and fully voiced dialogue. The language barrier kept it far from Western players. Dense and cinematic, it will fascinate fans of narrative adventure and anyone curious about Kojima's body of work.

Is Policenauts still worth playing in 2026?

A narrative adventure by Hideo Kojima exclusive to Japan on Saturn, Policenauts offers a cinematic cyberpunk point and click where you investigate a criminal affair in a space colony. The sublime anime art direction, mature Kojima scenario and cinematic staging make it an absolute masterpiece of the Saturn catalogue and of Kojima before Metal Gear Solid. For anyone fond of Kojima or cyberpunk visual novels, an absolutely essential recommendation today still truly here indeed for any patient newcomer now.
